| Round Table - Members of SGA and SAB met Feb. 5 to discuss upcoming events. The group met to discuss the annual Spring Fling and other events. |
Monday, students can enjoy a NASCAR simulator between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Later that evening, students can attend a movie showing in the Quad (the open area between the Memorial Classroom Building, Horsfall Hall and the Fred J. Taylor Library). Depending on the weather, the location of the movie showing may change.
The annual Crawfish Boil will take place Thursday near the sand volleyball courts by Maxwell Hall and the John F. Gibson University Center. The group would also like to initiate an annual sand volleyball tournament in conjunction with the crawfish boil called the Crawfish Cup.
University-recognized groups and organizations as well as individual student groups can compete in the event. The winning group of the tournament will receive the Crawfish Cup for one year. The following year, the group must pass down the cup to the next winner.
While these events are set, the group has yet to set events for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, though they did discuss several possibilities, including:
- Water events such as a night water balloon fight, team water gun fights and water volleyball.
- Interactive events such as bumper cars, rock wall, music videos and bungee jump.
- Gaming events such as a "Guitar Hero" or "Rock Band" tournament.
The group also discussed making Hena tattoos available, having a fireworks show and bringing in the Harlem Globe Trotters, if possible. The group also discussed a healthy competition for faculty and students.
Some members of the group discussed hosting a Scavenger Hunt around campus. Participating students and faculty would be pitted against each other in completing the scavenger hunt. One member compared it to the "Amazing Race."
Director of Student Programs and Activities Lindsey Kight said she would check on each of the events suggested by the members and find out more facts on pricing and scheduling. The group will reconvene Feb. 19 to discuss Spring Fling further.
The week after Spring Fling, the group will sponsor Crystal Imaging, which also students to get a self portrait etched in glass. This event will take place April 21 and 22.
In addition to planning Spring Fling, the group also discussed recent events hosted by SGA and SAB and the student response. According to the members, the events have recently seen positive turn out and response from student participants.
The first Black History Month movie shown in the U.C. Green Room received about 20 students. Kight stated though movie nights have not been as popular in the past, more students seem interested.
One member suggested bringing in movies that don't come to the local theater or movie rental store in order to draw in a larger crowd.
The group also reported a large turn out for the Super Bowl Party, which hosted about 30 students.
SGA and SAB meet every other Tuesday of the month at 12:40 p.m. in the U.C. Caucus Room. All students are welcomed and encouraged to attend. For more information, contact President Landon Grimes at lkg3609@uamont.edu or Kight at kight@uamont.edu.
