| Tackle - The Boll Weevils' offense and defense hone their skills during the warm-ups before the spring scrimmage. The Boll Weevils played its second scrimmage at the practice field behind Bankston Hall Saturday, April 19. |
The Boll Weevils’ defense started off aggressive only allowing a field goal in the first 30 minutes of the scrimmage. Until freshman quarterback Casey Cathcart and great backfield play turned the game around with three scores.
Head football coach Gwaine Mathews said that he was impress with the offense stepping up the way they did when sophomore quarterback Scott Buisson left the game due to injury. Mathews said he was more impress with the offense holding onto the ball and not committing any turnovers.
Defensively unable to combine as a unit for the entire scrimmage, the Boll Weevil defensive team plans to learn from its mistakes.
“We need to learn how to finish and play through the whole game as a unit,” sophomore linebacker Vincent Jackson said. “Once we learn how to put this together we will be alright.”
The team will play its spring game Saturday, April 26 at the Monticello High School football stadium at Hyatt Field starting at 5 p.m. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend, and admission is free of charge.
The Boll Weevils are set to open their 2008 season with a non-conference game at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday, Aug. 30 starting at 6 p.m. The first home game for the Weevils is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sept. 6 against Missouri S&T, formerly known as Missouri-Rolla.
