April 25

  Boost at the Science Center.

In the cafeteria for lunch and to monitor students.  A complaint of loud students in the Patio Cafe.  Made contact with the complainant who said that a group of male students were very loud and boisterous.  Told the group to either hold it down or leave the University Center.  The subjects left and no further problems were reported.

The barricades in front of the stadium were blocking the north-bound lane of Scogin Drive.  These barricades are falling into the road and causing a traffic hazard.  This officer removed all of the barricades from the traffic land and onto the sidewalk.

alt=   A call from the Monticello Police Department dispatch advising that a worker at the construction area of Wells Hall has fallen and was injured.  An ambulance has been dispatched to the scene.  In the office to write a memo in reference to the injury accident that occurred.

Out at the University Center with the Delta Sigma Theta function.  Noticed that weather was getting worse, and made way to the patrol car to get the weather report.  While in the patrol car, rain and pea-sized hail started to fall.  Advised another officer of the situation and to monitor weather reports as they become available.

Rainfall and wind beginning to increase in intensity.  Power shut down campus wide at approximately 2230 and restored at 2232 and back off at 2233.  After last power outage, I noticed a bright flash and sparks coming from behind the Forest Resources Complex.  Went to the Forestry parking lot and noticed that a power line was lying across a student's vehicle in close proximity to the fuel tank.  Radioed another officer and advised him of the situation.  The other officer arrived on the scene quickly as the second line fell within  20 feet of my patrol car. The other officer advised taht a road block be constructed using the two patrol cars until Entergy arrived on the scene.

The lines were still hot, causing small fire and a very dangerous situation.  We advised the Monticello P.D. of the situation as well.  Only the Memorial Classroom Building, Forestry and Maxwell appeared without power.  We had a hard time keeping students out of the area even with the road blocked.  Called boiler room staff for assistance to bring road block signs.  After three hours, the fire was still flying from downed cables.  Called Entergy again and they said they would have a crew as soon as possible.  After three more hours, we called again, and were told the same information.  Monticello P.D. said no Entergy crews had been seen.  Called again and at 0600 it was cut off.  Assisted with more road block signs in the parking areas and staff standing by for Entergy crew still after nine hours and three calls to the emergency number.

This officer believes we were extremely lucky that no one was hurt and no other emergency arose while having to block the two downed lines.  This officer feels that this should be discussed with a representative of Entergy before this situation happens again.

April 26

Out detouring traffic around the Forestry building and Maxwell Hall because of a hot high voltage wire that had broke last night during the storm.  Entergy was advised by the officer on duty three times of the downed wire with the first call being made when it happened around 2200 last night.  This officer made another call to Entergy and again advised them of the urgency of the situation.  They replied that someone would be dispatched immediately.

Made a second call to Entergy and they assured me that a line crew was en route around 0748.  Made a third call to Entergy around 0820.  Made a call to the Monticello area Entergy engineer and advised him of the situation on campus.  Entergy arrived on the scene around 0921.

Electricity to the campus has been turned off.  Maintenance is already aware of the situation.  Entergy is still working on the power line.  Several calls received wondering when the power would be turned back on.  All during the morning have been keeping the Counseling and Testing Center informed about the electricity situation because they were giving the Praxis exam while this was going on in the MCB.

Around 1224 the power came back on.

A call from Monticello P.D. dispatch asking that the stop sign from the intersection of University Drive and Highway 425 South be removed.

Out with a stranded motorist in front of the Agriculture Building.
