Gulf South Conference proved to be no joke as the University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils entered the lion’s den and walked out nearly untouched.

A Coach's Focus - Coach Gwaine Mathews intently watches his players. The Weevils showed their strengths and areas for improvement.

The Weevil’s defense silenced all critics from the first play when 5-9 senior linebacker Solomon Edwards set the tone with a vicio sack for a loss of 14 yards. Edwards finished with six tackles on the night to help lead the Boll Weevils to a 21-7 victory over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions.

After a first-half shut out coach Gwaine Mathews said, “This is the best defense I have seen since I have been here, but we got to get better at what we do.”

The Weevils defense now buys into Mathews system and plays with as much intensity and fire as he does when he coaches.

“It is a statement game, but we are not satisfied because when that happens you get too relaxed,” said junior linebacker Vincent Jackson. “We used to give up after a score late in the game, but this time we stayed pumped and ready to close them out.”

The offense, led by Freshman of the Year sophomore quarterback Scott Buisson, helped the Weevils into the end-zone three times, two in the air and one using his speed on the ground.

“We were sporadic on offense, but when we had to use some clock we did,” said Mathews.  “GSC is no joke, we have four-to-five teams athletically that could compete in this conference (Southwestern Athletic Conference).”

Not your typical laid-back coach, Mathews swings his arms to rev up the crowd and pounds the dirt with his fist after a good play and even jumps in the air after a great play.

“Man, I am a football coach. I am not your typical Cool Moe D coach,” Mathews said.

If the Boll Weevils continue the great all-around play, they might not be your typical UAM football team from the past.
