Early on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 8, a break-in occurred in the Math and Science Center’s main office at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
According to information from Morris Bramlett, dean of the School of Math and Sciences, suspects entered the building several times early Saturday morning.
The suspects allegedly kicked in the door to the main office, destroying the door and the door’s lock. Once inside the main office, the suspects stole soda and candy from the Biology Club, among other things. Bramlett said the damage could have been worse.
By that afternoon, most of the suspects involved with the break-in were caught.
Bramlett said that he and others will need to rethink the security of the Math and Science Center, do a better job at locking doors and putting away valuables. He also said getting security cameras may need to be considered.
University of Arkansas at Monticello maintenance employees came to the Math and Science Center later on Nov.8 to secure the building and continued to work with the department throughout the week, according to Bramlett.
In response to the break-in, Bramlett said he was more disappointed than anything else.
"As much as the Math and Science Center is lacking, it is sad to see money used for repairs when that money could have been used to help students," Bramlett said. "Everyone gets hurt in the long run."
The police reports for the crimes were not ready for the article at
the time of publication due to an on-going investigation.
