Hiram Sumlin, a senior History major and advertising committee chair, gave a report from the committee pricing different prizes for the annual event at Wal-Mart. The committee priced 43 prizes and stayed under its budget of $2,000.
“By having more prizes, students will have more of an opportunity to win something,” Sumlin said.
SAB also talked about the tabled Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony issue. In last week’s meeting, the group discussed whether or not to pay $800 to purchase the poinsettias for the ceremony and $100 for the musicians. SAB motioned to table the issue to get more information about how the group handled it in the past. Michael Reynolds II, SAB president, said Clay Brown, vice chancellor of Student Affairs, told him it is the group’s decision how to spend the money for the flowers. Reynolds said he expressed to Brown he did not think SAB should pay for the musicians and Brown agreed.
Some students still said SAB should not pay for the flowers. Jonathan Greenlee, a speech and communications major, said he thought since Student Affairs compromised about paying for the musicians that SAB should pay for the flowers. After a vote to pay $800 for the poinsettias failed, a vote to pay $400 for the flowers passed.
Finally, SAB discussed holding a Movie Night Jan. 13 at 6 or 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. The group originally voted to show “The Dark Knight” when it scheduled a movie night for the current semester. Since the movie night moved to the spring due to scheduling conflicts, SAB will vote on which movie to show at the last meeting of this semester.
In new business, Reynolds recommended having a secretary for SAB since the Student Government Association secretary does not have to attend SAB meetings. He recommended Tiffany Reed, a first-year Education major, for the position. With no other nominations, SAB voted to accept secretary by acclimation.
The next SAB meeting will take place Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 12:45 in the University Center House room. For more information, contact Mindy Holcomb, director of Student Programs and Activities, at Holcomb@uamont.edu or 460-1396.
