Huddle Close. The Weevils gather around for a pep talk and game plans. The Weevils currently sit undefeated this season with a 6-0 record.

The Boll Weevils win with ease and make history while doing it, defeating Champion Baptist 106-52 and improving to 6-0 on the season.

The 6-0 start has never been accomplished in the history of the Boll Weevils basketball program. Since 2001 head coach Mike Newell schedules rank division 1 schools at the beginning of the season, usually starting the Weevils off to a 0-1 start. This year the lost to UMASS counted as an exhibition and allowed the team to accomplish such a record.

“It is important when you have a basketball program near 70 years in existence and it’s special for the kids,” Newell, said. “Six wins is not a lot of wins, but it is still history.”

The Weevils enjoyed the history they made but are more focused on finishing the season strong.

“I always wanted to be a part of a team that makes history, but I also want to stay undefeated and win a championship,” senior, Bernard Seymour, said. “We just have to stay focus and not get complacent; this is nice (6-0 start), but a ring will be even better.”

Being ranked and undefeated will bring more tests for the Weevils from every opponent faced the remainder of the year.

“Being ranked and undefeated we are marked and now we can see how mentally tough our guys are,” Newell said. “Now, we are targets and we are going to get teams best shots.”

The teams co-captains, senior walk-on Bernard Seymour and senior Deron Brown lead in scoring with 25 points and 15 points respectively.

Junior Derek Easter added 13 points and 10 boards, becoming the first Weevil to complete a double-double for the season.

Gulf South Conference 2007-08 West Division, freshman of the year, D’Angelo Dean finished with 10 points in 18 minutes in his first action of the season. Dean suffered from a dislocated heel earlier in the year and was released medically to play just hours before the tip-off.

Dean got shaken a little when introduced to the new up-tempo style Newell has implemented into the game plan.

“Yeah, I was a little tired, but we pulled off the win and that is all that matters,” Dean said.

The Weevils head to Montevallo, Al. to compete in the Montevallo Classic Friday-Saturday and will face Montevallo Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and West Florida Dec. 6 at 4 p.m.
