Writing Center Extends Hours

The
Writing Center, located in room 113 of the Memorial Classroom Building,
extended its hours beginning Jan. 19, allowing students to have access to
computers and tutors on Sundays.
Diane Payne, the director of the Writing Center, said she received e-mails from several students who requested the writing center extend its time of operation. Many students work and have children and cannot receive the benefits the writing center provides.
This factor and the e-mails caused Payne to look into the budget to see if she could be of any assistance.
The Writing Center will now be open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. No change will occur on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays.
Belinda Jeffers, a tutor, plans to work on Sundays. All of the writing center tutors are senior-level English majors.
“Students who have a test or paper on Mondays will have the opportunity to come into the writing center on Sundays and finish the assignment or get help from the tutor,” Payne said.
Payne, as well as student workers, encourages students to take advantage of the Writing Center’s availability. Payne said it is a trial run and student usage will determine if the new hours become permanent.
