Senior walk-on and team captain Bernard Seymour helped lead the Boll Weevils to another win in conference play with his hustle, heart and game high 17 points.

“Bernard is a tough individual with a big heart, a former football player and he loves to play basketball,” head coach Mike Newell, said. “This is not his first big game, but tonight was his night and hopefully he will have some more.”

Both teams came into the matchup tied with a 4-1 conference record and from the beginning it looked that Tech would spoiled the home court advantage as they surged to an 38-25 first-half lead with its dominant half-court trap.

Tech’s head coach Mark Downey said, “We always say the aggressor wins and we came out aggressive.”

The second-half showcased two different teams the Weevils added Lorenzo Shine into the line-up and the Wonder Boys just didn’t seem to be the same aggressive team in the second-half.

“That second-half we just relaxed, the same thing happen to us at Harding,” Downey said.

Shine grabbed two offensive rebounds and scored the Weevils first-five points of the half in under two-minutes; it was just the sparked that the Weevils needed.

“Shine is totally capable of doing some great things,” Newell said. “None of our guards were doing anything, so I said ‘let’s try Lorenzo’ and he went in there and did an excellent job.”

Shine not only scored but he had multiple deflections, critical offensive rebounds and defensive stops; the most important stop coming with just under nine-minutes remaining where Shine dove for the ball and called a time-out to keep the possession. The following play Shine nailed a mid-range jumper to tie the game at 47 all.

“I had made a turnover the previous play and I knew I had to get it back or I was going to have to answer to coach,” Shine said. “Like coach says ‘you have to be ready when you’re called’ and I was just ready to help my team out by any means.”

After Shine’s jumper the Weevils went on a 9-6 run to close out the game with the victory. The Weevils move to a two-way tie for first with Christian Brothers with a 5-1 conference record and the Wonder Boys drop to a 4-2 record tying for second with Delta State.

The Weevils travel to Magnolia on Saturday, Jan. 31 to take on 1-5 Southern Arkansas at 7:30 p.m., while the Wonder boys take on the other number one team in the conference CBU at home in the Tucker Coliseum.
