The pit was packed Thursday night at Steelman Field House as the University of Arkansas-Monticello Weevils took on the Statesmen of Delta State University of Cleveland, Miss.  The Weevils were trying to end a two game skid following losses to Southern Arkansas and Christian Brothers both on the road last week.

Fade-away - Raymond Wright hits a fade-away jumper over 3 Delta State Defenders. The Weevils lose 84-77.

Bernard Seymour lead the Weevils effort with 19 points and several outstanding defensive plays resulting in turnovers for the Statesmen.  He unfortunately fouled out of the contest with 3:45 left in the contest.

Deron Brown also contributed 17 points while shooting 33 percent from the field and 66 percent from the charity-stripe.

Raymond Wright recorded another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Weevils put up an outstanding defensive effort, but had no answer for Delta States #5 Joe McCray who contributed 24 points on 8-15 shooting in 34 minutes.  Alton Robinson also contributed to the Statesmen’s with a 20 point and 9 rebound effort Thursday night.

The forty minute contest was very heated and physical as both teams received numerous warnings for unnecessary roughness and taunting.

The Statesmen’s slightly higher shooting and free-throw percentages were the deciding factor in this close thriller that finished with the final score of 84-77.

The Weevils next attempt to end the now three game drought is at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
