| Insect Remedy - SGA President Michael Thomas discusses student complaints of insects and warm temperatures in the dorms. SGA meetings take place every other Thursday at 12:45 p.m. in the University Center. |
The Student Government Association met March 26 to discuss student complaints of no air conditioning, as well as insects at the dormitories.
SGA President Michael Thomas said students contacted him concerning opening the windows in the dormitories due to warmer temperatures. He said students requested screens or new windows in order to prevent wasps and spiders from entering the rooms.
“They said it’s so hot in the rooms, and then their fear of spiders and wasps makes them scared to open the windows,” Thomas said.
Jonathan Greenlee, a senior speech communications major, said screens neglect to alleviate the problem because the windows open to the outside.
Thomas said the cost for replacing the windows remains unfeasible.
“The bug man comes in every month to spray the general areas, but he doesn’t do the rooms until breaks. He comes in during Spring Break and Christmas Break, but we do have a GA that sprays,” Michael Reynolds II, Student Activities Board president, said.
Reynolds said work orders to spray pesticides outside the windows serve as a remedy for the insect problem.
“As far as lowering the temperature, they are not going to turn the air conditioners on until the outside temperature is set and until it is set, it’s going to be hot,” Thomas said.
Thomas said the Food Service Committee plans to have 300 pounds of chicken tenders for students allergic to seafood for the annual Crawfish Boil April 1. Thomas said the Crawfish Boil starts at 4:30 p.m. at the sand volleyball court area beside the University Center.
