Kappa Delta Pi, the International Educational Society, sponsored a book fair April 13-16 in association with the Scholastic book program. The sale took place in the House room of the John F. Gibson University Center.
“We’re raising money for books for ‘at-risk’ children,” said Melissa Clayton, a member of the society.
She gave the children at the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home in Monticello as an example.
Members of the society and faculty members of the School of Education volunteered to work at the sale.
According to Sue Martin, coordinator of Teacher Education, the sale serves as the organization’s service project to the community.
“It is reflective of what we believe in,” Martin said. “To live, to serve and to teach.”
Martin said the sale raised $817.32, with a profit of $331.66. The profit from this year will be added with the $799 collected from previous years to purchase books for children.
She said the amount turned out a little lower than previous years, but the economy factored in.
“It’s just a turn of the times,” she said.
Misty Davis also volunteered to help with the sale.
“I think we did very well. It’s a good thing to do,” Davis said. “I’m glad I could help out.”
