Alpha Chi Honor Society collected dog food and money for the PAWS animal shelter during the month of April. This was the second annual project that Alpha Chi did for the PAWS animal shelter.
Alpha Chi members met at the University Warehouse Friday, May 1 to count up this year’s donations. Alpha Chi collected $494 and 700 pounds of dog food.
“Every little bit helps, and I appreciate donations of all sizes” Vicki Smith, owner of PAWS, said.
Smith feeds the dogs one thousand pounds of dog food daily. She also gives each one a hot dog as a treat.
PAWS is a no-kill shelter and Smith names all of the dogs. All of the sick dogs or the dogs with a disability such as blindness, deafness or three-legged dogs go home with Smith.
PAWS has an account at Commercial Bank for people to make contributions. The shelter needs donations to help with the cost of veterinarian bills, dog food and other needs for the dogs.
“Every penny that is donated goes to the dogs. We use most donation money for dog food. We pay out of our pocket for some things such as getting the dogs fixed,” Smith said.
Alpha Chi holds the drive for dog food annually. Last year they collected 550 pounds of dog food and $200.
“Even though we don’t do the drive year round, I hope that people will remember the dogs year around and remember to contribute dog food to PAWS,” Janelle Martin, president of Alpha Chi, said.
Contact Smith at 870-460-0877 for information about helping or adopting a
dog. She will also pick up any strays found in the community.
