In Brief
UAM Professors Present Papers at Arkansas Political Science Association Conference
Two members of the University of Arkansas at Monticello
political science faculty recently made presentations of their research at the
2009 Arkansas Political Science Association conference in Russellville.
Carol Strong, an assistant professor of political science, presented a paper entitled “Political Charisma and Revolutionary Leadership,” an examination of charismatic authority and leadership during revolutionary periods, with a particular focus on the various ways that charismatic individuals present themselves to their followers during revolutionary periods in order to consolidate their authority.
The study is an excerpt from a larger manuscript currently under review with Edwin Mellon Press. Strong conducted her research while completing her doctoral work at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She joined the faculty of UAM’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in 2008. She also recently served as faculty mentor for the Student Government’s Constitution Revision Committee.
Chris Wright, also an assistant professor of political science, presented a paper entitled “Assessing the Impact of Cap-and-Trade Markets for Pollution vs. Command-and-Control: The Case of RECLAIM.” His work is a quantitative analysis of the extent to which market based environmental regulations are improving air quality. The paper is part of Wright’s dissertation which was defended and approved in December of 2008 at the University of Southern California. Wright joined the UAM faculty in 2002.
Historic Arkansas Museum Celebrates "A Party for Peg" May 8
Arkansas artist Alice Guffey Miller has begun work on the artwork that will be installed on the plaza near the Historic Arkansas Museum’s north 2nd Street entrance. Miller was chosen from a field of talented Arkansas artists to produce a piece in honor of the museum’s long-time friend and commissioner, Peg Newton Smith. The concept for the piece is a larger-than-life square dance consisting of several figures cut from one-inch aluminum and named “A Party for Peg.”
The aluminum figures, being cut out at Arkansas-based SeaArk Boats, are anchored in pedestals, faced with one-foot-square concrete blocks. The blocks are embedded with found objects from every county in the state. These “story objects” were collected from people of all ages and backgrounds from around the state—and the stories or meanings the object has to each person is being collected as well. During Little Rock's 2nd Friday Art Night, these pedestals will serve as platforms for performance. The Historic Arkansas Museum invites you to put your performance on a pedestal at an open mic. Show your Arkansas Spirit in the form of music, prose, poetry, song and/or dance. The celebration continues Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Performers include University of Arkansas at Monticello students interpreting the voices of the pedestals, poet Mars Hall performing "Peg's Patter Call" and Dermott public school students performing a square dance.
