With their cleats laced-up tight, the  University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevil football team took the field Friday May 1 for its annual Green and White game.

A couple hundred fans dotted the renovated Cotton Boll Stadium Friday evening as they anxiously waited to get a sneak peak at the 2009 football team.  Some optimistic and some not so much with the coaching staff changes during the off-season.

Leading the Way- Head football coach Gwaine Mathews lead his men on the field for the green and white game in preparation for their 2009 campaign.

Any and all questions were answered by the end of the contest.  This team is ready to take on the toughest conference in Division II Football.  No one expects it to be easy, but many know will perform well this season.

Even though there was a rainbow over Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium, the annual green and white game would prove to be no walk in the park. Due to thunderstorms in the area, patrons were forced to wait a short span of fifteen minutes before the game could begin.

The game was very hard fought and showed the upcoming football campaign will be very promising for the team.  Quarterback Scott Buisson side of the ball on the ground.  Buisson showed courage as he ran through the fast defense, taking a couple of big hits from linebackers and defensive backs alike.

On the defensive side, all of the players showed improvement over last years' team and will surely be an asset needed to survive a difficult campaign in the Gulf South Conference.

Defensive backs kept all wide receivers on their toes and looking over their shoulders as they waited to unleash monster hits on the unsuspecting team members.

After falling just a game short of the playoffs in last seasons' campaign, the coaching staff headed by Gwaine Mathews is more intensely preparing the team for the long battle that will begin Aug. 27 in Stephenville, Texas against Tarleton State University and conclude with the Boomtown Classic against Southern Arkansas University.  The Boomtown Classic will be played in El Dorado Nov. 7.

Hopefully, the Boll Weevils will make the playoffs for the first time in 20 years this upcoming season and bring back the winning tradition of UAM football.

This article incorrectly identified Kendrick Wilson and Scooter White as players in the Green and White Game. Kendrick Wilson was in street clothes recovering from off season surgery and Scooter White exhausted his eligibility (he was a senior). This article has been updated to reflect these corrections and we apologize for any inconvenience.
