Clubs bring people together with one common interest. The Biology and Medical Science clubs on campus give students one way to do just that.

Merging Clubs - Shyann Scott, president of the Biology Club leads the meeting. The Biology Club and Medical Science Clubs met Sept 25. |
Co-sponsor of the club John Hunt, assistant professor of Biology, said the Biology and Medical Science Clubs are two separate clubs that meet together during the same time because many people are members of both clubs. Biology Club Vice President, Leeann Phillips, said, “I participate in the club because it allows me to interact with others that share my passion for biology…. I have benefited from the club in many ways, meeting staff from medical colleges, interacting with my professors more and getting the information for succeeding in college and graduate school.”
The biology club participates in the recycling program on campus. They also sponsor the snack shop available in the Science Center office. Snacks for sale include a variety of chips, candy, sodas, muffins and gum. Hunt said this is one of the biggest fundraisers for the club.
The Medical Science club will hold a cookout fund-raiser Oct. 30. Only faculty in the Nursing, Math and Science divisions will get to place orders.
“Partly for a courtesy for the faculty and because our club isn't large enough for a campus-wide event like that,” Shyann Scott, president of the Biology club, said.
Phillips said the money for the fund-raiser usually goes to help the club take trips to medical facilities or other health-related trips.
Assistant Professors of Biology Hunt, Chris Sims, Karen Fawley, Mary Stewart and Glenn Manning co-sponsor the clubs.
Students interested in joining the clubs should look for fliers about the clubs posted throughout the Science Center. Dues for the clubs are $5 per semester, according to club member senior Sara Prior.
Any enrolled student may join the club; they do not need to be a science major.
The next biology club meeting is Oct. 9.
