Hailing from North Philadelphia and discovered by Missy Elliot, Jazmine Sullivan brings rhythm, blues and soul to a whole other dimension.

Sullivan’s first musical performance debuted on “Showtime at the Apollo” at the tender age of 11. Even then, Sullivan astonished audiences with her powerful rendition of “Accept What God Allows.”

Having the honor of performing with Stevie Wonder at age 13, respected artists champion Sullivan’s vocal abilities, including Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan.

According to jazminesullivan.wordpress.com, Sullivan found her love for music in church.

“I remember singing like around five or six in the choir,” Sullivan explained. “I was in the junior choir, but I was the first child admitted into the young adult choir. I was so proud of myself and with the support of my family and church, I began singing.”

On Sept. 23, J Records released Sullivan’s solo recording debut album “Fearless.”

Sullivan’s entire album illustrates her immense talent with different musical styles. Sullivan’s first single “Need U Bad” mixes reggae with desire, while “Bust Your Windows” introduces a flamenco flavor with revenge. Though Sullivan beams with obvious talent, the single “In Love with Another Man” stirs deep emotions and a certain honesty, leaving one to replay the song over and over.

According to Sullivan’s My Space page, Sullivan said “Fearless” embodies her state of mind right now.

“I’m 21, confident, fearless of being honest in my songwriting and musically not afraid to try different things,” Sullivan said.

Along with Sullivan’s soulful singing talent, she wrote most of the lyrics for her debut album “Fearless.” Sullivan’s lyrics intend to empower women to stand up for what they believe in and if pushed, to push right back.

Sullivan’s imagination, vocal talent and heartfelt honesty will hopefully make listeners fearless to appreciate her introduction of jazz, blues and gospel into the music scene.
