When it comes to sex, most students know about the birds and the bees, but what about the signs and symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases?

Get Tested -  Whitney Wynn (left) discusses signs and symptoms of STDs while Lacey King holds the poster board about it. The nursing students took turns to talk about different STDs.

On Nov. 3, nursing students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello campus hosted a workshop on STDs informing students on just that.

Students who attended the workshop learned about the curable and non-curable types of STDs. They also learned about the signs and symptoms of chlamydia, human papillomavirus, HIV, AIDS, herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea and trichinosis.

Nursing students mentioned even a condom cannot protect people from all forms of STDs. Also, one does not have to have sex to get an STD.

Around 30 students at the workshop learned how to properly put on a male condom. The nursing students did this by using a cucumber and a condom.

   Ways to prevent STDs include:

  • abstinence
  • knowing the partner
  • look before going through with the sexual act for abnormalities in the area.

Julie Ross, a nursing student said the turn out was better than expected for the event.

For more information on STDs or to get tested, contact the Monticello Health Department at 870-367-6234.
