| It's good! Nick Green kicks the ball to put UAM first on the scoreboard. The Weevils lost 16-23 Saturday night against SAU. |
The Boll Weevils finished off the 2008 season 7-4 after losing their final game 16-23 Saturday, Nov. 8 to the Southern Arkansas Muleriders.
After hosting the final game of the season, Boll Weevils Head Coach Gwaine Mathews talked about the game and season.
“It is hard, I am so into the moment and I don’t see the whole picture (season) right now, because of how bad we played tonight,” Mathews said.
“After a couple of days I will look back and say we had a good season, but right now I am just in awe that we could have done a lot better in this last game.”
A 31-yard field goal by Nick Green put the Weevils on the board first, followed by a two-yard touchdown reception by Tim Green to move UAM to a 9-0 lead over the Muleriders.
The Muleriders responded with a 15-0 run, including a safety due to a holding call in the third-quarter. SAU outscored the Weevils 17-7 in the second-half.
“We tried to go out on a positive note for the seniors in this game,” senior linebacker Jeremy Brown said. “We had the lead but we let it slip away. It’s disappointing.”
While the loss may be fresh on the minds of the players and the coaching staff, many fans still hold on to the memories the Weevils gave them this season.
“I am sorry they didn’t win tonight, but I am going to remember this season because it is our first winning season in a long time,” Professor of English Betty Matthews said.
With high hopes of making the playoffs, the loss added salt to the Weevils playoff wound but could not take away all the team accomplished for the year.
"I think it is a good season. We had four wins last year and seven wins this year, that is a great turn around,” Athletic Director Alvy Early said. “I think it is a good foot in the door for having a better season next year.”
