| Voice of Experience - Brian Hairston, division chair of Computer Information Systems, tells the CIS Club about his experiences working for the Acxiom Corporation. Hairston became the Division Chair for CIS in August. |
The new division chair of Computer Information Systems, spoke to the members of Chi Iota Sigma in the Babin Business Center Sept. 3.
Brian Hairston introduced himself and told the Chi Iota Sigma members some of his background before becoming the division chair of CIS.
He earned his degree in CIS from the University of Arkansas at Monticello and went to graduate school to earn his master’s degree. After graduation, he went through up to 14 interviews and practiced the interview process by going to interviews at jobs he did not want.
“It’s never too early to start looking for a job,” Hairston said.
He worked at Acxiom Corporation and he worked in several areas of the company. For one of his postions, he worked on Unix Servers used by large companies. He worked on Unix Systems for 8 years.
He described working at the Acxiom Corporation as a great learning experience and a wonderful career. He even helped to fix some of the “holes” in the company. He said a person has to be able to learn and adapt on the fly.
He described four areas a student needs to learn:
- Professionalism
- Communication
- Teamwork
- the ability to learn and teach yourself
He suggested CIS students continue to challenge themselves and work on concepts.
The Chi Iota Sigma meeting opened with CIS President Calvin Davis introducing the new officers for the 2009-2010 school year including:
