Weevil Welcome Week Provides Activities and Fun for Students

Incoming Freshman, transfer students and returning students returned to campus with activities and fun planned during Weevil Welcome Week before and after the start of school Aug. 24- 27.
Incoming freshman and transfer students received the chance to meet the many of the 60 plus organizations found on campus at the Organization Fair held Aug. 24.
Many organizations attended the fair from different parts of the campus including the religious organizations, several of the fraternities and sororities, the Knights and Lady Knights, the School of Business, Intramurals and the many clubs found on campus.
Baptist Collegiate Ministries displayed the game NCAA2010. The game features UAM football players and cheerleaders with up to date uniforms, stats, height and weight for the players. The game can be played at Easports.com.
The Student Activities Board hosted a free movie night held at the Malco Movie Theatre Aug. 24, bowling at Timberlane Bowling Alley, Aug 25 and Comedian Josh Sneed on Aug. 26, who has appeared on Comedy Central and Premier Blend.
Sneed started his show with introductions, how he tried to find out about the University of Arkansas at Monticello and his trip from Little Rock. He talked about topics from dogs, children’s toys and cartoons, fad diets and much more.
“I need to lose weight, lets talk about it,” Sneed asked the crowd.
Sneed started to come up with new fad diet with one being called the “Medical Miracle Diet,” which he described as losing his appetite after watching one episode.
During the first part of the performance, he spoke to a woman on an audience member's phone. He found out she was going to be about 10 minutes late and asked the crowd to stand up and applaud her when she arrived, which they did with enthusiasm.
The women of the crowd cheered for Sneed when he described his learning of several domestic skills including cooking, cleaning and ironing.
Sneed also held a contest with three members of the crowd to tell the funniest joke. SGA President Sandy Herring, freshman Danny Brennon from Montrose and Dathan McMilleon. McMilleon won the contest with the joke about comedian.
“He was great and hilarious and well worth the time,” said junior Sara Jewell, from Cove, Ark.
Sneed toured with Dave Chapelle in addition to performing on Comedy Central and other programs. According to his bio at joshsneed,com, Sneed opened for other acts during his career such as Ron White, Lewis Black, Dave Chappelle, Robert Schimmel, Dane Cook, Mitch Hedberg, Dave Attell, Todd Barry, Bill Burr, Charlie Murphy, Todd Glass, Ted Alexandro, Pablo Francisco, Larry The Cable Guy, Bill Engvall, Greg Giraldo, Harland Williams, Jim Norton and Louis C.K. He has performed at over 25 colleges and over 20 clubs around the United States.
The night of free bowling received a good response of a pack house, which brought students out to bowl. Some students brought their children with them. Senior Shawn Wilson brought his son, Terrell Wilson and helped him to roll the boll down the lane.While some students bowled, some played pool or videos games and many talked and visited with other students during the event.
Some students competed in the Agony of D’feet Sand Volley Ball Tournament, Aug. 27. Two women’s teams and seven men’s teams signed up to play. The first place winners for the Men’s teams included J.J. Solorio, David Nix, T. J. Weed and Josh Tittle representing A.O. Silver. Grayson Warren, Ray Spears, Daniel Titsworth and Micheal Rosson won second place and represented BCM Blue. The Landsharks earned third place. Phi Lamb & BCM Black tied for fourth place. The MBSF won first place for the women's team and BCM Pink for second place. The first and second place winner received T-shirts as a prize.
The Chad Gentry Band performed at the "Burger and a Band" while the participants played in the tournament. The MBSF hosted the event.
Rob Leonard, the campus director of the MBSF, knew about the band from the lead guitarist of Jackson Waters. Jim Murphy, the agent for The Chad Gentry Band and UAM graduate, performed “You are God” singing the lead along with Chad Gentry. The band members included Todd Sheay on lead guitar, Brett Vargason on Drums, Tom Michaels on the bass and Chad Gentry playing guitar and singing lead.
Aramark served dinner and desert for the students present. Leonard described the turn out for the event as good with 150-200 people attending.
