SGA Cabinet Approves Two Resolutions

The Student Government Association Cabinet approved two resolutions brought before the Senate and appointed a new secretary.
Zack Tucker, president pro-tempore of the Senate, introduced two resolutions, which passed in the Senate, Jan. 28.
Resolution one introduced the idea of urging UAM to apply for the National Arbor Day’s "Tree Campus USA" program. The program is the same as “Tree City USA,” except it is designed for Universities. The program started a year or two ago and currently no campus in the state of Arkansas has applied for program.
Tucker talked to Jay Jones, chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, about applying. He showed Jones everything they needed to apply and said Jones thought they had everything they needed to apply.
Resolution two authorized the Student Government Association to give $200 to the Collegiate Farm Bureau chapter to send Shelby Williams to the Arkansas Farm Bureau National Convention in Washington D.C.
Williams and Robert Stark, professor of agricultural economics, originally came to the Student Activities Board meeting to request the money, but the Senate thought the SGA funds would be more appropriate to use.
The Senate approved to send them the money providing they fulfill a few regulations. The Collegiate Farm Bureau would be required to spend the money to send Williams to Washington D.C., to return any unused money and to report on his trip to the student body when he returns. Williams already planned to have a presentation when he and Stark presented their proposal.
SGA President Sandy Herring appointed Calvin Frierson as the new SGA secretary. Herring said the appointment was sent to the Senate to be voted on. The Cabinet members approved the appointment.
Herring brought up the idea to develop better communication between the student body and the SGA.
The Cabinet discussed ideas such as having bulletin boards in the Residence Halls, a student web page on the SGA Web site or having a discussion blog.
The student page would give students a chance to send pictures of events on campus and give a location where organizations can advertise different events.
“They would have to send in because we don’t want random people posting,” Herring said, “We could help them advertise things going on campus.”
Herring said she talked with Holcomb about updating the SGA Website, but it would not be updated until the Information Technology completed the new system.
The new system will require everyone to check their e-mail if they want to go into campus connect and other areas.
