The Student Activities Board met Feb. 9 to discuss the Lifeshare Blood Drive and buying new pool sticks to use in the Patio Café.
SAB Chairperson Yvonne Hinshaw said Terri Richardson, director of Student Health Services, asked the SAB for $175 for the Lifeshare Blood Drive Feb. 15. Hinshaw said three $25 declining balance cards can be won by individuals at the blood drive. She said students can also donate in the name of an organization. The organization with the most donations wins a $100 gift card.
“With the relief in Haiti, this probably, most likely is where this may be going. If we can help by encouraging organizations to get people to come out, then we may actually get to help some people,” Mindy Holcomb, director of Student Programs and Activities, said.
The SAB approved $175 for the Lifeshare Blood Drive.
Ronald Forte, Student Government Association president, proposed the idea of the SAB hosting a basketball game for Haiti relief. He said students could use canned goods as admission.
“In my opinion, this is a college campus and we are supposed to be doing things like this. It’s a good chance for us to come together to try to help another country,” Forte said.
Hinshaw asked Forte to present a proposal at the next meeting. Angelia Buford, a senior social work major, said Forte should approach Lesly Jean-Francois, assistant professor of French and Latin, to see what is needed in Haiti.
Forte proposed getting a speaker for Black History month Feb. 24. He said he conversed by e-mail with Percy Steele to be a possible guest speaker.
The SAB voted to pay $250 for a guest speaker for Black History month.
Forte said he looked online at Walmart.com for new pool sticks to go in the Patio Café. Forte said the online Web site listed individual pool sticks for approximately $33 each. He said he found a better deal in the Fat Cat Stampede section. The pool sticks cost $122.30 for six pool sticks.
“If we get these, I would like to see some sort of check-in and check-out type of procedure,” Hinshaw said.
Buford said a fight took place Feb. 8 where a student broke the last pool stick. Buford said the student could be held responsible if a check-in policy existed. Holcomb said she intended on checking into getting a policy in place.
The SAB approved the monetary request for $122.30 for pool sticks to use in the Patio Café.
Buford asked for $300 for the Collegiate Social Work Organization’s Easter egg hunt and for two game nights for the International Club. The CSWO plans to use the money for candy, eggs and prizes for the egg hunt and games and refreshments for the game nights.
The SAB tabled the vote for the $300 for the CSWO until Buford presents an itemized list and dates at the next meeting Feb. 23.
Caleb Burger, choragus for the Creative Society, requested $300 for Mocha Madness as part of Spring Fling. Burger said the Creative Society plans to use an enchanted forest theme. He said they cut down bamboo to make musical instruments as gifts for the performers.
The SAB approved the $300 for Mocha Madness.
Hinshaw said SAB positions needed to be filled. She said the Senate must appoint some positions. Zack Tucker, president pro-tempore of the Senate, nominated Burger to fill a position.
The SAB approved Burger to fill a vacant SAB position.
At the last SAB meeting Jan. 26, Robert Stark, professor of agricultural economics, asked for $200 to help the Collegiate Farm Bureau president attend an education trip to Washington D.C. March 2-5. The SAB tabled to vote at that time and suggested Stark ask the SGA for the donation because the SAB donated money to organizations. The SGA approved the monetary request Jan. 28. The SAB plans to front the $200.
“The SAB is fronting the $200 because the SGA money is an agency account, so it has to go towards specific items. The next time SAB hosts something and we need to buy stuff, it will come out of the SGA account,” Tucker said.
Holcomb said the SAB account contains $34,000.
