MONTICELLO - The Student Government Association Cabinet did not vote at its March 4 meeting, but discussed several campus issues and new ideas for informing the campus.

The cabinet discussed a variety of topics including WeevilNet, parking, student input and ways of broadcasting student events.

SGA President Sandy Herring talked about parking on the cafeteria side of the John F. Gibson University Center. She said people received tickets by parking by the areas marked in yellow located near the cafeteria’s dumpsters.  She said she also talked to the Campus Police about streets behind the university center.

“If you’re blocking those little streets back where they park (on the cafeteria side of the University Center), they will write you a ticket for not being able to get through,” Herring said. “So if you’re going to park back there make sure you are pulled over enough, or you will get a ticket.”

She talked about the issue of student parking.  One cabinet member described parking on campus as horrible. Herring explained how there was not much space on campus and the parking spaces available are divided into three different areas; staff, commuter and residences halls.

Herring asked SGA Treasurer Calvin Frierson to check into the financial situation for the Student Government Association. She asked him to check and see if the account would be changing due the budget changes made this year.

She advised him to talk to Mindy Holcomb, the Student Programs and Activities director, to check what rules they have to follow. She said she waned to know if they have time any frames and if they are doing things appropriately.

Frierson brought up the need to get more students involved on campus.

“I know one thing, we need to get students more familiar with our campus,” Frierson said.  “You ask some people where the Willard (Hall) building is and they don’t know where it is and they have no clue.”

Herring brought up the idea of posting maps. The SGA Cabinet in attendance talked about how transfer students and news students received tours of the campus, but some do not go on the tour.

Frierson asked why UAM did not have a radio station or TV channel. Herring asked him to check out possible ways they could start a radio station and to check out other universities who have radio programs. She mentioned local radio stations sometimes allow people in the community to broadcast during certain times slots.

Herring asked SGA Secretary Hunter Hall to contact the Journalism Department to see if they would be interested in the project and the radio format if they want to use radio to get out news as well as broadcast announcements.

Herring talked about the new software called WeevilNet. Herring said she still wants to open space where students can post announcements. Having a page for students would give them a way to interact and know what was happening on campus. She said the page might even help UAM as a recruiting tool.

The SGA Cabinet could not vote at this meeting without their adviser present and all members of the cabinet members present. Holcomb or SGA Vice President Ronald Forte could not be there to attend the meeting.
