Alpha Chi Presents Awards at Annual Banquet

   MONTICELLO - The Arkansas Zeta Chapter of Alpha Chi honored faculty, staff and members at its annual banquet April 12 in the Capitol Room of the John F. Gibson University Center.

   Alpha Chi awarded “Staff Person of the Year,” “Teacher of the Year,” “Rookie of the Year” and “Administrator of the Year.”

   Member Matt Whiting presented “Staff Person of the Year" to his mother, Mary Whiting, director of admissions and chair of the UAM scholarship committee. Secretary in the School of Math and Sciences Leslie Lowery and Brooke Rodgers, assistant director of admissions, tied for runner up.

   Member Leslie McKiever presented Jim Edson, professor of geology, with "Teacher of the Year." Assistant Professor of Spanish Isabel Bacon and John Hunt, assistant professor of biology, tied for runner up.

   Member Shyann Scott presented Mary Stewart, assistant professor of biology, with “Rookie of the Year." Gregory Borse, assistant professor of English, received runner up.

   Member Christopher Ellington presented Morris Bramlett, dean of the School of Math and Sciences as the winner of “Administrator of the Year." R. David Ray, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, received runner up.

   The organization recognized its graduating seniors by giving them a medallion with the Alpha Chi seal on it. 

   Assistant sponsors Christine Bryant and Jean Hendrix helped hand out the medallions for the seniors and awards for the staff and faculty.

   Alpha Chi members who presented papers received white stoles to wear with their cap and gown. Ellington, McKiever, Kasey Medlin, Shyann Scott and Jim Renfroe presented papers at Super-Regional Convention held in Little Rock March 25-27.

   Mary Whiting presented certificates to the winners of the Academic Olympics. Whiting presented the certificates to first place winner Joseph Lockwood, second place winner John Ragsdale and third place winner Deborah Wylie.

  Alpha Chi President Heather Greer received the Chancellor’s Leadership Award for her work as president. 

   Greer presented Kate Stewart, professor of English and Alpha Chi sponsor, with flowers and a gift on behalf of the organizations members.

   Greer announced the new officers for Alpha Chi: Rebekah Heflin as president, Joseph Lockwood at vice president, Douglas Boultinghouse as secretary and Jordan Morgan as treasurer.

   Belinda Jeffers received the Alpha Chi Service Award. Even before being initiated, Jeffers volunteered to paint the Spirit Wall for Alpha Chi. Kate Stewart credited the organization's winning first place to the buffalo Jeffers painted.

   Kate Stewart announced Susan Stark as the recipient of the Alpha Chi Award for her volunteer work with College Goal Sunday. 

   Clay Brown, vice chancellor for Student Affairs, made the closing remarks and read an insert from “Everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum.
