MONTICELLO - A variety of books line the shelves, her desk is organized with papers neatly stacked. Her computer is on with a program displayed on the screen. This is the office of a librarian, but not just any librarian, the Electronic Resources and Reference Librarian.
Lanee Dunlap, a 1991 University of Arkansas-Monticello alumna, knew the library would be her home during her work-study years at the university. She worked the circulation desk, often running errands as well as checking books in and out.
With a Bachelor of Science in science and marketing and a Master of Science in information science, received from the University of North Texas, Dunlap was more than qualified for what would come next in her life.
So in 1994 she accepted a job at UAM, holding several positions including Access Services Librarian, Library Supervisor, Circulation Manager and Interlibrary Loans Manager. In 2007 she became the Electronic Resources and Reference Librarian.
“Being the Systems and Electronics Librarian combines my love of computers, technology and organizing. I use technology to connect users to information,” Dunlap said.
Currently working on redesigning the library’s Web site, Dunlap plans to make the site easier for users by making it more accessible. She also plans on conducting surveys and analysis to meet every need of the user.
“We are working on a Facebook page. It is important to be where the users are,” she said.
The Facebook page will include search boxes for catalogs.
Dunlap, along with Access Services and Reference Librarian Kathy Davis, is working on converting the site to a Blackboard system rather than WebCT. This enables distance learners as well as the academic community to have permanent contact with librarians for questions. This system will provide users the ability to use links without having to exit the program because the content will be on one platform, making it easier for users to find.
Not stopping at implementing a Blackboard system, Dunlap plans to work with Mary Heady, Special Collections and Reference Librarian.
Attending trainings on new software that will allow a digital collection of special collections, Heady will use the Centennial Celebration as the first set of collections. A projected date has not been set to launch the digital collection due to the amount of work and trainings needed. However Dunlap expects for the other additions to be ready by Fall.
It’s not just "Books, computers and catalogs, oh my" with Dunlap. During her leisure time, she enjoys shopping in the Little Rock and Dallas, Texas areas.
“I have a new-found passion ... shoes,” she said seemingly excited.
She loves to sing in her church’s choir. But the choir switched practices to Thursday nights so she is unable to attend. Dunlap works Thursday nights at the library.
Each librarian works a night shift until 8 p.m. helping students with research questions they may have.
If you have problems accessing the resources or you want to suggest a resource, Dunlap welcomes you.
“We are working to reevaluate and improve the services we provide,” Dunlap said. "We want to make this a library everyone really loves.”
