 Yvonne Hinshaw

Born in Eureka, Calif., Yvonne Hinshaw, Student Activities Board chairperson, initially wanted to attend the University of Arkansas at Monticello to pursue a future in Law school.

After moving to Monticello at the age of 16, Hinshaw finished high school in Crossett where she lived with her sister. Before attending Crossett High School, she received her education primarily through homeschooling. Hinshaw said when she first arrived at UAM, she wanted to be lawyer.

“I took a couple of Pre-law classes with Chris Wright, my adviser, and decided that Law school was definitely not for me,” Hinshaw said.

Chris Wright, instructor of Political Science, said he felt Hinshaw maintains the ability to do well in whatever field she decides to go into.

“I think she is a great student and (she) seems to be pretty much on the ball most of the time,” Wright said.

Hinshaw said Carol Strong, assistant professor of Political Science, helped her narrow her focus to International Relations.

“Thanks to her I now love doing research and looking at politics from an international standpoint,” Hinshaw said.

Carol Strong, assistant professor of Political Science, said Hinshaw’s interest in international relations grew from her active participation in Comparative Politics class, but more specifically from her spring 2008 Contemporary European Politics class, which included a comprehensive project and class presentation.

“In the case of Yvonne, it quickly became clear during our discussion (both in class and during office hours) that she had a talent for International Relations and was willing to consider highly theoretical questions with determined analytical intent. I cannot take all of the credit, however, since she has also participated in at least two of our United Kingdom trips through the Horizons Program in the School for Social and Behavioral Sciences,” Strong said.

Not only does Hinshaw hold the position of SAB chairperson, but she remains involved in the Young Democrats of America, president of the Residence Hall Association and participates on the Debate team.

“In high school, I was a pretty quiet girl. I didn't do a whole lot, but I was involved in Future Business Leaders of America and the National Honor Society. Now that I'm in college I'm way more involved,” Hinshaw said.

Being involved in many campus organizations doesn’t take away from some of her leisure activities, which involves listening to music and watching her favorite television show, NCIS.

“I didn't start watching (NCIS) until about the third season, but I've seen just about every episode that has been made. It’s the only show on television I would say I'm addicted to. It’s so bad that, if for some reason I do miss an episode, I have to download it on iTunes the next day,” Hinshaw said.

Her favorite music consists of Ben’s Brother and Shinedown, but she said she will always love country music. Johnny Cash is one of her favorites.

“When I was kid, I listened to nothing, but country music or really old nostalgic music,” Hinshaw said.

Hinshaw said she gets cabin fever fairly easy and while she loves Arkansas, she hopes to attend graduate school out of state. She said when she graduates in May she will be the first member of her family to complete college.
