The Student Activities Board met Oct. 27 to discuss who would work SAB-sponsored Halloween activities and plans for the Boomtown Classic, in which the University of Arkansas at Monticello will play Southern Arkansas University in El Dorado, Nov. 7.

Mindy Holcomb, director of Student Programs and Activities, brought up options to transport students to El Dorado to attend the event.

Holcomb’s options included spending $1,009 to charter a bus that would carry 55 students, spending $1,660 to use three buses from the Monticello School District, per the superintendent’s approval or renting passenger vans from Enterprise, for which she did not have a price at the time.

Board Member Zack Tucker suggested waiting to get a count of students interested in traveling to the event before making a decision.

The board agreed, so Ronald Forte, SAB board member and Student Government Association vice president, made a motion for Holcomb to be able to spend up to $2,000 for transportation, which the board approved.

On Thursday, Oct. 29, Holcomb sent an e-mail to the campus with information about a Weevil Train to transport students to El Dorado for the game. The transportation would include all pre-game festivities and the game, but would not allow time for the post-game concert starring The Lost Trailers.

Benton Gann, president of the Ducks Unlimited chapter at UAM, brought up the idea of co-sponsoring a “Gumbo Cook-out” with SAB.

Gann said the purpose, would be to provide students with a campus activity and increase awareness of UAM DU.

Tucker asked Gann to return to the next meeting with specific numbers and details before a decision could be made.

SAB Chairperson Yvonne Hinshaw also asked Secretary Tiffany Reed to begin issuing demerits to members not present at meetings.

The board will meet again Nov. 10.
