The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences will be hosting its another trip for its International Field Studies program in May 2010.
Participants of the field study will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland.
According to Adam McKee, associate professor of Criminal Justice and Chris Wright, instructor of Political Science, the program is available to any interested UAM student. A student’s GPA and classification will a factored into the selection process of who will and will not be going.
“I think this program will build confidence,” McKee said. “A lot of people are intimidated by the airline travel process and the passport process and security. Once we have taken the students over there by the hand for a few days, they become very confident.”
The program began five years ago. The first trip was to England in 2006, Ireland in 2007, Scotland in 2008 and England in 2009.
Most of the field studies trips recently have centered around the British islands. Before Wright and McKee, who are over the field studies program, arrived there were limited opportunities for this program. They did have a Spanish trip to Costa Rica for students studying the Spanish language.
“We wanted give the students the same kind of opportunities that Dr. McKee and myself had,” Wright said. “There’s a lot of students around UAM who have never been out of southeast Arkansas. So, we wanted to give them the opportunity to see the world and explore new things. Hopefully, we can open their vision to what the world is like a little more and hopefully bring that experience back to UAM and Arkansas.”
Interested students should fill out applications right away. Usually, 20 students is the limit for the trip. For more information, contact Chris Wright at 460-1189 or e-mail at wrightch@uamont.edu, or contact Adam McKee at 460- 1279 or e-mail at mckee@uamont.edu.
