This time of year students have crossed the midterm bridge and  began to look forward to the ending of a busy semester. But before Thanksgiving and Christmas, there is preregistration. For those who are smart, whether by trial and error or just good ole common sense, you will find Nov. 9 marked on their calendar.

During a two-week period of Nov. 9 through Nov. 20, currently enrolled University of Arkansas at Monticello students can get first dibs on classes they want for the spring.

Students who have been admitted to the University by Nov. 9 can preregister Nov. 16 through Nov. 20.

To save time, look online at the courses on the UAM Web site and choose your classes. Be sure to write the down each course number. Then, go to your adviser and confer with them. Be sure to stay on course towards graduation because you don’t want to get into your last semester and realize you overlooked a class and you can not graduate. Also,  for those who have 60 to 90 hours, make sure you get an official degree audit signed by your adviser and dean of your school. Not doing so will result in not only not being able to preregister but register as well.

Graduate students and undergraduate students who have 60 or more hours under their belt, at least a 2.50 cumulative grade point average and are not on conditional academic standing can preregister online after meeting with their adviser. To check your eligibility and preregister online, go to Campus Connect. It will let you know if you are eligible and give instructions on how to preregister. Campus Connect will also inform you of who your adviser is.

Not everyone takes advantage of this ritual and they suffer greatly. I didn’t preregister once. I needed a “Gen Ed” course, which was a science class. Now, of course I am not a biology major, so I wanted the “easiest class.” I didn’t see the need in taking a bio-diesel Antarctic chemistry class (yes, I made that up) when I can take Earth Science. Of course everyone else thought like this so, because of my irresponsibility,  I had to take Elements of Geology. It wasn’t “hard” but now I can’t ride down the street without saying, “Hey look, I see Chert!”
