New Sandwich Shop Offers More Than Just Desserts

   MONTICELLO - A new sandwich shop, located behind Popeye's and in front of Larry's Pizza, offers more than just desserts.

   Greg and Christi Whaley, owners of So Goodies from Star City, said they had always wanted a business of their own. 

   They feared opening their business in Monticello because they didn’t know how well they would be received in a town where they were not well known. 

   The couple's fear did not last long.

   "The whole town has been really great," Christi Whaley said.

   The couple said they feel they have been welcomed with open arms.

   The couple said they chose to put their business in Monticello because they felt that Drew County centers here, it's more populated and Monticello is a college town.

   They said their plan was to open a business that mainly focused on desserts. Now, the business focuses more on sandwiches and offering a variety of other things.

   So Goodies offers sandwiches, desserts, soups, wraps, salads, a kids menu and is constantly expanding its menu.

   Greg Whaley said he and his wife are making constant changes and are constantly growing. He said he even plans to put in a drive-thru.

   "We pride ourselves in customer service. A mediocre smile is not acceptable," Greg Whaley said.

   Christi Whaley said she feels the atmosphere of their business is laid back. 

   Jennifer Lawrence, a junior at UAM, said the reason she loves it is because the sandwiches are different from Subway. 

   "I like it (So Goodies) because of the friendly atmosphere, the courteous staff and the homemade bread," Lawrence said.

   So Goodies is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is located at 157 North Park.
