A Commentary from The Voice Staff

Going into a new year, most everyone resolves to make at least one change. Some persevere, others relapse pretty quickly.

We here at The Voice want to tone our paper up a bit--a little nip and tuck. Get it in shape.

Staying the course sometimes requires a little outside help, some support and yes, at times, constructive criticism.

To paraphrase ol’ Abraham Lincoln, The Voice is of the students, by the students and for the students. We are working on some changes we think will give the publication a boost, but this is your news source. We want to know what you think, too.

For example, did we miss something?

We have a small staff but we work hard, between classes and homework, to report on everything that we think matters to our readership. Sometimes, however, something gets by us.

Do you think a particular department or organization needs more coverage? Do you know an outstanding faculty or staff member who deserves to be profiled? Is there a problem or issue concerning UAM or its students you think needs to be addressed? Let us know about them. Many great news stories happened because the reporter acted on a great tip.

Opinions are like, well, fertilizer. They can sure raise a stink but they make fertile ground for the exchange of ideas. We may not always agree with yours and you may not always agree with ours. Nevertheless, we must do our jobs rain or shine, so we know occasionally getting our boots muddy comes with the territory.

At least you know we’re being honest. And we tend to think integrity’s pretty important, even when it provokes criticism.

Just as Voice staff members can express personal opinion through the Commentary section, you can speak your mind in the Reader’s Forum. We welcome your opinions, even when we disagree with them, and we encourage you to tell us what you think.

If you have a penchant for writing and would like to contribute a story, pitch your idea! Contact the editors at thevoice@uamont.edu, and if your story is newsworthy and well-written we will consider running it with your byline. We take artwork and pictures, too.

Give us a nudge. Even the hardiest athlete needs a push from time to time. What do you think would make The Voice better? Our Voice, after all, is your Voice. If you don’t speak, however, you have no voice. Let us hear yours so we can better represent and serve you, our readers.

You can send comments, concerns, suggestions and ideas to thevoice@uamont.edu or post them publicly in the Reader’s Forum.

See you at the finish line.
