The University of Arkansas at Monticello will hold its 10th Annual UAM/Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival March 9-10 in the Memorial Classroom Building Auditorium.

Ten years ago, the Hot Springs Outreach Program sent a notice to UAM to see if the school would be interested in being apart of the Hot Springs Film Festival.

Robert Moore, UAM professor and chairman of the film festival committee, said “Man, we jumped on it...What an opportunity.”

Moore calls the festival a tremendous learning opportunity for students, exposing them to a film medium they are not accustomed to.

The documentaries are real stories that happen to real people. The films show experiences in a very naked way that is sometimes humorous and sometimes tragic.

According to the film festival's program, "Woodruff: A Lesson of Nonviolence" will be one of the films shown. It tells the story of a Little Rock elementary school that took a stand against violence and went 380 school days without a fight.

The films being shown are educational and important because they teach the history of the state and the historic actions that people take to make a change in both entertaining and informing ways.

According to Moore, UAM's film festival has had a steady attendance growth over the years, including visits by the community and neighboring school's classes.

The film festival is free and open to the public thanks to the Hot Springs Film Festival sharing the films with UAM.

“We are grateful to have this chance,” Moore said.

The current members of the film festival committee at UAM are Robert Moore, Gregory Borse, Kay Walter, Dianne Payne and Scott Lykens.

To find what films will be showing, call the arts and humanities office at 460-1078 or view the schedule here.
