"The Vampire Academy," a fictional novel by Richelle Mead outdoes the possibilities of other vampire novels of our modern time.
Mead seems to go over what our generation expects out of a novel about immortals and changes everything. There are three types of vampires total, Moroi, who we would see as living vampires, they feed off of willing human feeders and also have different magical elements they consume. Then the Strigoi, who we would consider as stereotypical vampires, they're bloodthirsty and murderous types, which one could only become Strigoi with the death, by feeding, of a human life. Next, Dhampirs, which have one mortal parent and a Moroi other. But, their job in the world surrounds protecting the Moroi.
"The Vampire Academy," most definitely targets young adult readers. Rose Hathaway, the Dhampire, main character, defines a true genuine character. Compared to the recent shy, under spoken teenage girls that fill our novels today, Rose goes for what she believes in. Rose never backs away from a fight and always says what she wants. Her flirty attitude soon gets her in trouble. Her best friend Valissa Dragomir, one of the twelve leading royal families, counts on Rose to protect her from everything. After Lissa’s family dies in a car wreck that Lissa survives, Lissa uses her power to save Rose’s life. This makes Rose shadow kissed, because she had traveled past Earth but then Lissa brought her back.
The book starts off with Rose and Lissa in the human world, because they escaped, as Lissa’s powers were used against the school’s will. After being caught and brought back, Lissa continues at St. Vladimir’s Vampire Academy and Rose starts her training with her new mentor, the extremely hot Dimitri.
Although the ugly rumors spread about their escaping as Mia, a girl they barley know, starts most of them. However, a few misguided rumors at High School, compares not so much to dead animals placed in Lissa’s room. No one knows if the dead animals, consider as a joke, or something more serious. They soon find out the dead animals just mark the beginning.
Rose finds herself fighting her mentor's crush, Lissa’s safety and her reputation. "The Vampire Academy" fills your mind with wonder and is packed full of action. Teenage audiences will love this engrossing tale about best friends, love, powers and immortals.
The second installment of ‘The Vampire Academy: Frost Bite’ hit shelves in 2008. These bestsellers cross over absorbing to mesmerizing.
Mead continues, Rose’s story in, ‘Blood Promise,’ Spirit Bound,’ and working in Seattle on her sixth addition to "The Vampire Academy."
