The Student Activities Board met Tuesday, Sept. 28 in the conference room of the Student Affairs office to discuss plans for homecoming and Halloween Havoc.

Mindy Holcomb, director of student programs and activities, told members Athletic Director Chris Ratcliff spoke to her about SAB joining forces with the athletic department to host the Halloween Havoc basketball showcase Oct. 27.

Holcomb asked SAB if the organization wanted to contribute T-shirts and prizes. The board agreed on ordering 200 shirts for the event.

Zack Tucker, Student Government Association president, asked about giving gift certificates to the University of Arkansas-Monticello Bookstore as prizes. Holcomb said gift certificates could be given.

SAB Chairperson Tiffany Reed suggested three gift certificates valued at $25 each.

Ronald Forte, SGA secretary and SAB member, suggested including movie passes with the certificates. Holcomb said she had passes left over from a previous event.

Tucker also asked about the Residence Hall Association collecting donations of canned goods at the event. Holcomb said the idea would have to be run by Ratcliff before a decision could be made.

Holcomb gave an update on the homecoming pep rally planned for Oct. 14 on the town square.

She said there is now a possibility the high schools would not be able to participate due to scheduling conflicts with each school’s individual homecoming festivities. She said she plans to check with other businesses around the square to see if they want to join in the celebration.

Holcomb said she plans to use this year’s event as a test for possibly expanding the rally in future years.

Carrie Johnson, program coordinator for tobacco education, also presented information to the board to increase awareness about the University being a smoke-free campus. Johnson plans to meet with other organizations around campus to provide information.

Holcomb said she plans to work with Johnson to include smoke-free awareness projects in upcoming events, which may include Alcohol Awareness Week and/or the Great American Smoke-out.
